Alianza Sierra Madre, A.C.

Alianza Sierra Madre (ASMAC) is a nongovernmental organization working with indigenous peoples and rarámuri Ódami in the Sierra Tarahumara , Chihuahua state , northern Mexico . The actions and projects are developed by an interdisciplinary team in the areas of law, anthropology and ecology. The team is also ethnic mestizo and Tepehuan ( Ódami ) . Because of the social problems and the high degree of economic , social and political marginalization of these people , the organization focuses its work on three programs :
 
1. Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples DHPI  (by its initials in Spanish)
2. Community Wellness 
3. Conservation Biocultural
 
 

Our Mission 

We are a civil society organization that accompanies the indigenous peoples of the Sierra Tarahumara in the exercise of their human and collective rights, the conservation and restoration of their natural and cultural assets, for the well-being of their communities.

 

Our Vision 

Be a professional civil society organization, transparent and recognized for its work in the exercise of human and collective rights and the good living of indigenous peoples and communities in the state of Chihuahua.

 

About Us

Alianza Sierra Madre AC. It was legally established on 23 January 2007. However , some of the team members have worked with indigenous peoples and communities in the Sierra Tarahumara since the early 90s of last century.

 

Strategy: Rights-Based Approach

Transversally, in the three work programs, we adopted a Rights-Based Approach, which means working in two areas:
a) We seek to increase the degree of commitment of the government in the recognition of the rights provided in the national and international legal framework and of society with respect for human rights.
b) We train those interested so that they are aware of their rights and can demand that they be respected.

 

Principles

  • Respect for human rights in general and, in particular, the human rights of indigenous peoples, women and children.
  • Promotion of the welfare of the communities of the Sierra Tarahumara, including the economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects, both individually and collectively.
  • Evaluation of the environmental sustainability of all the actions we carry out.
  • Multidisciplinary and interethnic work team.
  • Intercultural approach.
  • Understanding that environmental conservation is biocultural.
  • Orientation with gender equality.
